Hello. I'm having trouble with a "lost" document. When
I attempt to open the document it comes up as a blank
page. However, when I check the document on properties
it says that there are 19.5 kb of information. That is
probably the right size--this is a history project my
sixteen year old daughter has been working on for several
days, so it is a fairly big document.

Does anyone have an idea why it comes up as a blank
document when it apparently is still there? I've
tried "open and repair", I've tried emailing it myself
and making a copy of it thinking that perhaps Word was
the problem. No luck.

Any ideas how to recover it?

Thanks for your help.
Bob

If you open Word, click "File", "save as" and save your blank document, you
will get around 20 KB (at least that is what my XP version gives me). A
good rule of thumb is allow for 20KB for the "overhead" of Word, then add
2KB for every page of just text. For example if you have a 40 page document
of just text, it might be somewhere around 80 - 100KB.

You are correct, your document is lost. Apparently it got saved over with a
blank document (no text). Since you have written to your hard drive, it is
a good bet that it is lost. Have you clicked your "File" menu to see if it
is listed at the bottom? Is there by chance another version listed under
the "Start", "Documents" window? If not, start over! This time make backup
files by copying the file using Windows Explorer to a floppy or CD!

Bill--Thanks. Unfortunately it isn't listed at the
bottom of "File" nor is it under "Start", "My
Documents." Thanks for those ideas. Now I just have to
deal with a very unhappy young lady. RJS

Isn't that the norm with any 16 year old girl, regardless of her losing her
history project?? >:-)

I couldn't resist... I remember when I was 16. I was a BRAT. :)
