Lost default 2000 sounds

inplace upgrade - Thanks need a bit more help

There was a kind soul on Nov 10th who indicated to me how
to recover my lost sound media files on Win 2000 - Sgopus
mentioned....
Just do an inplace upgrade and reapply your service packs
it will not erase your settings

I need a little more explanation to solve my problem.
Please what is an inplace upgrade - I think I may have to
go back to win 98 and maybe go up from there? Is that
inplace
