I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 with WinXp Home. Twice in the past 3 months when
starting up I get scrolling in one of the opening WinXP screens and it is
something that says " Lost chain cross linked......." something,
something.......a bunch of file numbers scrolling down the screen and then
"file orphaned". I switch the power off and then everything functions
normally on boot up.

What does this mean?

I believe that it means your hard drive's directory is somewhat corrupt.
(That can result from an improper shutdown, or a software crash.) What you
say sounds like the machine has called the "check disk" utility. Maybe you
should run it yourself, manually.

From a command window, enter

chkdsk /f c:

(assumes C: is the startup drive). You'll be informed that chkdsk can't be
run, and asked if you wish it run at the next restart. Give it a yes, and
restart.

If the corruption is a symptom of hardware problems, this may not help much.
If you've only seen it a couple of times in the past few months, I doubt
that you have much to worry about.
