Help! I'm convinced the only way to get my computer back is to re-format and re-install the operating system. The only problem is that the computer came with Windows installed and I did not receive a backup CD. If I have the software key, is there a way I can re-install Windows XP Home addition without having to re-purchase the software?

Your Vendor should have given you the means to return your machine to
Factory settings. Read the manual, or contact your vendor. If you did NOT
receive any method of doing this, then either your vendor is in breach of
the OEM agreement with MS or they are crooks.

Look for something called a "System Restore CD".

Many pre-loaded brand name systems (particulary laptops) come with a special
configured version of Windows XP that restores from this CD, instead of a
reference OEM Windows XP CD.

Greetings --

The OEM PC manufacturer is required to have provided you a means
of restoring your PC to it's original, ex-factory state. Consult the
manual that came with your PC, or the PC manufacturer's technical
support.

Also, some mfgrs such as Compaq and HP use a partician on the HD with the OS
restore info (I've seen this on a friends HP machine, but have never tried
to use this "Feature")...I disagree with this feature for obvious reasons.
Best Buy informed me that by contacting the mfgr, you "may" be able to
purchase CD's for your machine for about $35...What a rip off! This is just
what I was told, for what that's worth.
