hi there everyone. as the subject suggests, i lost my administrator password,
now i cant logon to my own com without it. is there any way to help me get
through this difficulty?

Hi

Hopefully you are not referring to the Hidden Administrator's account.

The Hidden Administrator's account can be accessed from Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode reboot the system and tapping the F8 key as the
BIOS info passes by. You should see a Welcome screen with an icon
for Administrator, click on it. If a password was never set for this
account
you will be allowed in leaving the password blank.

Now click Start, and then click Run.

In the Open box, type the following command, and then click OK:

control userpasswords2

Click the user account that you forgot the password for, and then
click Reset Password.

Type a new password in both the New password and the Confirm new
password boxes, and then click OK.

Mark,

A lot of people had the same problem around here, so I wrote a program as a
cure for the problem. It boots from a floppy using SYSLINUX (yeah, I know,
posting about using Linux on a Microsoft site). I can give you a link to
download the image of the floppy if you like.

i'll try Bert's suggestion. and Brian, can you send me the program to my
email? so that i can help my friends the next time they have the same problem
that i do.. thanks alot! =)

Hey Mark,
I guess they don't show emails in the profiles cause I couldn't find one
anywhere. Here's a link to a self-extracting floppy image. It's set to
automatically format the floppy. This is a bootable disk, so you have to
boot your computer with it. Basically, if you follow the directions it gives
you you should have no problem. Its not entirely accurate when writing
passwords on Windows XP Pro sometimes (didn't work on 1 out of 6 machines),
so I recommend just choosing to blank the password then change it later from
the Administrator account while in Windows. When it loads it says it's only
been tested on Windows XP Home/Pro up to SP1, but I recently used it on SP2
(both versions) and it only would work when you chose to blank out the
password. That's okay because once you blank the password, you can go in and
change it by logging in as Administrator. Also, USB keyboards are not
supported; you must use a PS/2 keyboard (converter won't work either.

When it asks about SCSI drivers, just press <Enter>. You can accept all
defaults. After you choose which account to change, be sure to read the "**"
lines as they will tell you whether or not it will be able to change the
password at all. When you change the password, be sure to answer "y"
(default is "n"). Be sure to save when you are done; otherwise, all the
changes you made will be lost (defaults are all "n", answer "y")!

If it works, it works. 99% of the time, it works.
