I don't have the admin password and need to do a fresh
install of XP; how do I get past the login screen in
order to start the new install?

help?

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable device.

===> Accessing Motherboard BIOS
===> http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. After installing Windows XP, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

7. It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except for you mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.
After XP is installed, visit the support website of the manufacturer
of each hardware device to obtain the latest drivers or software
designed to work with Windows XP.

thanks for all the info, but I tried that and it still
boots to a login screen. Any other ideas on how to get
to a fresh install screen?

You do not need a Windows password to follow Carey's instructions.
If you do, you are not booting from the CD as stated.

If is a BIOS password, check your motherboard/computer manual or
contact the manufacturer as this is a motherboard issue and not a
Windows issue.

I don't know if it makes adifference, but this is on a
laptop. It's not a BIOS password. I changed the primary
boot device to the CD drive and the CD drive is working.
Everytime I reboot, it goes to the CTRL-ALT-DEL screen
instead if an XP setup screen??

WHat am I missing?

I just tried to disable the other boot device (secondary
was HDD) and it said "no bootable device found"
so I guess it's not recognizing the external CD drive as
bootable??

thoughts?

Hi

Note that the message part of the instruction "You'll see a message to boot to
the CD." is only visible for a couple of seconds early in the boot process
(saying something like "Press any key to boot on the CD"), this is easily
overlooked. Failing to press a key during this time, it will not boot on the OS
CD.
