Lost ability to burn DVD

After I installed SP2 on my WinXP Home machine, it no
longer will recognize a dvd disk for burning. I can play
a dvd, read a data dvd, but when I put in a blank dvd, it
will no longer recognize it as writable media. What to do
next?

Please identify what application you were using to burn DVDs with.

noticed that lately it says that my blank DVD's are full
when I know they are not! Good luck finding help!
 
Three thoughts for both of you. First, try removing the drives from
Device Manager (Start-Run-devmgmt.msc) and then reboot. Second, update
the chipset (motherboard) drivers (or reinstall them if you have the
latest version since SP2 messes them up on many installs). Finally, try
the suggestions here:

That just seems too easy :)

The point that Shenan is trying to make is that XP cannot write to DVD's
on its own. You must use a 3rd party software program such as Nero or
Roxio Easy CD\DVD Creator.
 
Well, I guess for the last 3 years mine was defective. I
have been able to drag and drop in windows xp any files
to a data dvd and burn it with no problems. I have never
used any other third party program, I would just double
click on my F drive, drag the file over and click write
files to disk. After I installed SP2, I can no longer do
this. I can, however burn in a third party program. It is
just not what i am used to.

That may have been due to software programs that you installed such as
Roxio's Easy CD\DVD Creator (which is the burning engine used in XP).
It may have had support like this and did the DVD's for you, but I just
tried to burn a data DVD of 4.2 GB of data and it would not do it with
just Windows burning wizard. I know I have an odd burner in this
computer, but it should still be able to burn the same way yours would.
