Loss of a word document, 2 weeks of work

Dear Sir/Madame, I have a new Dell computer and Windows
XP. I was using my old Office 97 program, which worked
well with me in the past; I have just been told this is
an obsolete application. I used it because it was
familiar; I never lost a document if I saved it, it was
either in Windows explorer or the Recyle bin.
The document I have just lost is neither in the recycle
bin or Windows explorer. I have the Word 97 logo with the
title in the "My documents" screen, but when I click on
the icon I get a buzzing sound, then a blank screen under
the correct title, then it says "1 kb." (The title?)
I have tried "Search" and clicking the Microsoft icon in
the keyboard plus F, but I have no luck. Sometimes I get
the title of the document but no text at all.
Is there ANY way I can retrieve my text? And two weeks'
worth of work?
Yours truly, John R. Carpenter

If you actually see the file "Whatever_it's_called.doc" in My Documents,
then try opening it using the "Recover Text from Any File" setting in Word's
File Open dialog.
