losing sort order in report?

I've got a query returning records and sorting first by lastname, and then
by first name... but when I open the report based on that query, the order
is lost.. anyone know why?
 
You can set the sort on your report using the group and sort options dialog
box for the report.

The sort order of the query is irrelevant in the report.
To sort the report you should use the report's Sorting and Grouping
dialog:
In Report Design view, click View + Sorting and Grouping
