Losing downloads

I have Windows XP Home, and IE 6.0. I can successfully
download from the Windows Update site. However, I can't
seem to download from anywhere else.
EX. I try to download Adaware, Spybot, etc, and the IE
comes up with text in the lower left saying
downloading..., then eventually reports "done", with a
small square icon in the upper left of the IE window. No
dialog box comes up to indicate, or allow me to specify,
where I want to download the file, and when I search
later, the download does not exist. I know I have had
several viruses, and adware, as I downloaded Adaware and
spybot at work, and ported it home to my PC.
Any tricks to fix, IE for this problem?

Here's the fix, courtesy of Alan Edwards, MVP:

If it is only .exe files, then read on and see if this is relevant:
You may have an invalid plugin.
Netscape-Style Plug-ins Do Not Work After Upgrading Internet Explorer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303401

Remove the plugin with Regedit.exe
Start-Run-Regedit.exe
Navigate down to this key and remove it, after exporting it as a
normal safety precaution.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Plugins\Extension\.exe

If that key exists, then you will see what plugin has been installed.
(QuickTime by the looks of it and if so, I believe they have a fix)
The key does not normally exist.
