Losing access to access

We have several computers newtorked to gether using a hub. (No server) One
computer has the access file on it. A shortcut link to that file is on the
desktop of the other computers. All computers have access installed. We
where using access 2000 and then upgraged to 2003. The problems started at
this time. Before the computer with the access file physily on it could open
the file and imput data and run reports and at the same time another user
could open the shortcut and do the same things. Now, (even when no one is
eveing using the host computer) while access is opened through the shortcut
at radom times I will get the error "disk or network error" followed by
"Object invalid or no longer set" access will no longer respond and it will
have to forced to close. This error can come within the first ten seconds or
after an hour of data entry.
Any sugestions as to what is goin on?

Thanks
Arend

I used a97, a2000, and 2003.

I would have to say that 2003 is a very good version, and have been problem
free for me...

Are you talking about new computers...or that you just upgraded? (or, did
you upgrade to a new OS also?).

It is not clear how much of what was upgraded..but if you are taking new
hardware..and new OS..then you changed a lot...

It sounds like you have some permissions problem here...but it is not clear
exactly.

I would however if you are using a multi-user system here..then I would use
a split database (this recommend also applies to a2000).

You can check out this concept here:
http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/splitapp.htm

Also, the issue of only one user sounds like a issue of the database
settings (Exclusive setting will only allow one user).
Check out tools-Options->Advanced tab. Check the "default" open setting
(make sure it is shared).

Also, if each user on the system does not have FULL read/write and delete
permissions, then often ms-access will open the file in single user mode....

The system is XP pro, with everything working well together. The only
upgrade was from office 2000 to office 2003.

Multi user can be on at the same time with no problem, its just that the
users that are opening access through the network (using the shortcut to the
file on the other computer) will have those errors already described, and
then you must force a shutdown and then open it up again.

Hum...ok.....

I have not seem any posts that reflect this problem after upgrading the
a2003..but not changing anything else..

I would however split the database. I would also provide each workstation
with a mde file for the front end.

It may have been luck..or some other reason..but as a general rule..if you
run ms-access in multi-user mode..then you need to provide a SEPARATE copy
for EACH work station. (you can't allow multple users into the same mdb
file..you must split the mdb into two parts). And, you should consider using
a mde..as that also increase stability...
