loosing files & Icons

Hi,
My daughter has a Sony xp, and has Nortin Anti Virus & has
downloaded all the current updates before all of these
virus's hit, and has also downloaded all of the critical
updates from windows update, but she just called and said
she is loosing files and icons on her computer.
Can anyone tell me what this could be?

Be sure she not only has the updates but has run a virus scan to see if she
has any active viruses. An update only protects from the day its installed
and if she acquired the virus before it was installed, she may not receive
notification from the software so she needs to run a virus scan to check her
system.

Beyond that, she should run chkdsk. Open Explorer, right click each drive,
select properties, go to the Tools tab and click check Now under Error
Checking. Sometimes she will receive a message the drive is in use and
cannot be checked and asked if she wants the drive checked the next time she
boots the system, answer yes. If she's having problems with her hard drive,
that can be the cause this function may find problems on the drive.
