The "Light" version is freeware.

The payware versions have exactly the same playing engine, they add
bells and whistles to do with setting up situations and tutorials and so
forth.

It's comprehensively beating me at level 1, and I used to be a fairly
good player. :-)

You can do better. I play at Level 6 and even though I think it cheats with
the roll, it has made me a more aggresive player. My favorite backgammon
game is Agushka for Palm, but that is not freeware.
