Once upon a time, back in the days of DOS there existed
a miniscule file called TINYAT.EXE, which was about 5K in size
and did everything that ATTRIB did, in less than half the size.

Anybody have it? Or know where to find it? Would accept
any substitute of same size.

Was it part of DOS or just around in those days? Do you recall which version of DOS?
I have a few different ones around here and a DOS machine..I have ver 3.1(?) on the 5"
floppys. And 6.0/6.2 on 3" floppys.

Zero find on TINYAT.exe, but was able to locate this one called "BITS"
thats only 1.4k download size.

Maybe this one can be of some use to you.

BITS Similar to all the other DOS attrib utilities but with a very
'readable' display the others do not have.
System Requirements DOS v3.x or higher
Installed Size 900 bytes
Archive Size 1.4k
Misc NOT A DOS FAT32 UTILITY!

Which Operating System are you going to use this program on?

Highly recommend you stick with the Attribute Utility that came with
your OS.

Thanx to all who responded .. and, to answer those who were not
very familiar with DOS .. No, TINYAT.EXE was not a part of any
DOS OS, whether Microsoft or otherwise. It was a product of
individual genius that did the same thing at ATTRIB.

I have since (since original post) found TINYAT (5K), and also
SATS.COM .. another opus of only 265 Bytes (!) in size. It was
written as Super Attributes. Copyright (c) 1995 Jem E. Berkes

Some of you had some sort of concerns about using these old
programs on a FAT32 (or other) environment. Realize that these
programs affected only the attributes of any given file, and
had absolute ZERO effect on your operating system installed.
I've since used TINYAT and SATS on numerous files, and they
both work admirably... no ill effects to my FAT32 system.

265 BYTES ... Holy Microscope!!

That's obviously from someone who KNOWS how to program. Remember KISS.

Great program, that I had for years...

The other day I installed a photo-catalog-program, looked at it, and
would delete it. But that prg. installed a ...cantremthename.ini file in
every library on the harddisk. This *.ini-files would take some time to
delete, so I just ran another small utility from "those days"...
The utility XDEL is not so small, (10KB) but on a commandline I just
typed: XDEL C:\cantremthename.ini /s ... in 2,5 sec's the ini's was
gone..:)

Another small utility is RESET.COM. Just 16 bytes prg....if OS f...s up
its easyer to type RESET and press <ENTER> than bend down and find the
resetbutton on the PC..:)

I use quite a bit of small old DOS utilities, and every day I wonder why
programs have to be so big nowadays...

A few months ago, I had to download some Java-things 16MB just to be
able to log on to my bank using Firefox...I was shaken...

Saw a post just now, and the program I could'nt remember was PICASA...
Just don't like programs that make files everywhere..:(

Yes, yes .. Picasa! I also deleted it, and had to work for days
cleaning out my drive.

This business of putting bits and pieces all over the ship is spoiling
the experience and adding unnecessary complexity to programs. I prefer
the 'nix way of many programs which do one thing and do it well.
Piping the output of one program to the input of another does the same
job as the big program, just as quickly and with less space consumed
by the program.

Except when the keyboard is frozen too.

Hear, hear.

LOL. Time to change banks, don't forget to let them know why.

I used to write programs in Z80 assembler. Small is beautiful.
