It's a bit cutthroat, but a good first-person-shooter game is Cube.Frank said:If both machines are Windows XP, I was thinking there are some games that
can be played over a network such as Hearts.
There is also a tank games called bzflag. It can be found here:

You can setup your own private server or play against others on public
servers. I am not sure what operating systems are required to run your
own server.
You might also check out http://www.freshmeat.net for other
possibilities. It is not a game only site but there are lots of programs
listed there that are open source.

We play this on our work LAN at lunch when the weather outside is bad.
Family play would be interesting:
"Look out! Mom's got quad-damage!"

Ditto. A great game! I've spent more hours playing this game (both on- and
off-line) than I care to admit to.
The same authors have a new game out called Sauerbraten ("a major redesign
of the Cube engine'). However, the last download I have (late 2005/early
2006) did not allow for online play. This feature was still in development.
Link for Sauerbraten:
http://sauerbraten.org/
I see that the authors have a new version of Sauerbraten (release date: 11
June 2006), so they *may* have online play features ready now. I've not
checked it out, but plan to do so.

So I strongly suspect that online play is available.
