Preferably one that doesn't use the MS Access database engine or file
format. Can anyone recommend a couple of good ones?

(send postcard to his daughter if you like it - some people here might
rate that not freeware)

Locate32 http://locate32.webhop.org
More features but bigger and slower to load, though database updating
speed seems much the same (subjectively). Don't know what file format
they use, but, they don't have .mdb extension.

Both catalogue your disks very well, but they don't offer the chance to
make a per-file comment like, say, the DOS shareware CatDisk did. I think
the following ones do, but, I've not checked them recently:

DiscoMania http://www.fortunecity.com/skyscraper/jobbs/79/index.html

DiskCat www.rob.cybercomm.nl

and

Disk Explorer Professional http://www.diskexplorerpro.com
had a free-for-personal-use version last time I looked - bigger, more
modern, more complex program but more powerful
