Hi There,

I do re-installs for people as requested, and what I generally do is copy
all of their C drive to another drive and allow them to then after the
re-install go through the copy and pull back the stuff they need, documents,
pictures, etc...

I would like to be able to highlight the whole of the C drive folders and
copy and paste, but I know I can't as there are certain files that are
locked to the PC and stop the windows copy routine.

Is there any software out there, that you can just highlight the folders you
want, and if it comes across a file it can't move, i.e. system file, it
ignores it and carry's on with the rest of the folders?

Regards.
Paul.

Would cloning the entire drive over do the trick for you?

Backup! Image/Clone :
http://kgiii.info/windows/all/advanced/image-clone.html

There's a free application listed there (and some pay applications) to use
for that. You could just boot outside the OS and use the tools to move the
copy of the C: drive over to a new drive that way perhaps?

Unfortunatley not, I've got programs that can clone an entire image, I'm
needing it so the end result is a load of files that a person can just
filter through with explorer, like there looking at there original C drive,
but in a folder called "C Folder Backup", or something similar.

Oh, and ideally free... :)

Hmm... How about something like BartPE?

Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD:
http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

With that you should be able to move files about pretty easily and as
you'll be outside of the OS you won't have to worry about them being locked.

Ghost and Acronis TrueImage both enable you to explore your backup
image and extract files from it (TI is my preference). However, neither
is free.

Image the drive to an external drive, Reinstall Windows. Restore files from
the image to a new folder. Acronis True Image allows you to mount an image
and copy files from it. Other imaging programs have similar functions. You
could also use NTBackup to accomplish this.

Take a look at XXCOPY from http://www.xxcopy.com

Good luck

I work for a computer tech shop, and we use Acronis TrueImage to image
drives then restore portions of files later. It's worth the money.

I agree with all the comments, but I don't want to be doing the searching
through the files, that is for the person who has had the re-intsall.

I have used Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) and I'm currently
copying over all the files I needed, looks like it is doin the trick.

Thanks for all (everybodies) feedback..
Regards.
