Has anyone had experience with this who could give a bit of advice ?
We have been using 3Com HomeConnect Home Network Phoneline '3C410-Kit'
for the past 5 years (which comes with 2 cards and Win98SE update software &
HomeConnect Software). We have several PCs in our home and each has dual boot,
Win98SE and WinXP Pro. The local network operates at 10Mbits rate and the
gateway to DSL/Cable modem operates at 100Mbits rate. You do not need any
software if you want to use 3C410 card with Windows XP Pro/Home. XP will
find the card and install software from your XP disk. For Win98SE you have to
use the software that comes with it. You can mix and match both Operating systems,
i.e., If you give a common local network name, you can operate the PCs in either OP
systems in the same nework. If you have a laptop, you need to buy something like
'Netgear PA101' to connect to the same phoneline network and use an USB port of
your Laptop (i.e., if you can find PA101 plugin) If you want to transfer files and also
want to use the comnon printer, it is easy to use the phoneline network., on the other
hand, if you have bought a home recently, possibly you will have a built in RJ-45 cable
system. The RJ-11 phoneline operates in three different frequencies, audio, and two
high frequencies. Make sure you plug in a trap (cheap $2 each) for each connected
phones, otherwise you will hear loud hum in your phones. Make sure XP firewall is
set properly for the internal network.
Go to Google or eBay and look for 3C410-Kit, you will find them at about $50 for
two cards (buy an unopen box). Make sure your PCs does have a place to plug it in.
Netgear PA101 plug in for USB and phoneline may cost you $20 each.
Good luck.
