I am looking for a template that allows me to schedule rentals preferably in
a GUI environment.

However, none of them is specifically for rentals. Some could possibly be
modified to fit your needs, but you do not specify what you are renting
(equipment, houses, yachts), so not sure what your requirements would be.

The problem is I really need it to look like a spreadsheet showing dates and
equipment so that at a glane I can see what equipment is available on what
date.

It sounds like you want a product that is beyond what a sample template could
do. You may need to purchase a retail product. When I did a google search
on "equipment rentals business software," there were several places that sold
that type of software. Most of them allowed you to download a demo. I would
recommend downloading several products, and comparing them for ease of use,
applicability, and price.
