Longer boot time

After I installed SBC YAHOO DSL I've been experiencing boot times of 90-120 seconds whereas previously it was a matter 0f 5 seconds.

Do you mean "boot" or do you mean "log in" times? If you mean log in, check
your DNS settings and make sure they are set to either your DNS server (if
you have one) or SBC's DNS servers.

After installing SBC Yahoo DSL, I am having a problem similar to Scott M
with my CPQ Presario X1030 (Centrino, 512 MB RAM, etc.). But my 1-minute+
start-up delay involves the boot-up sequence - not logging into SBC. This
began shortly after upgrading the factory-installed XP Home Edition to WinXP
Pro using a purchased M/soft XP Pro Upgrade CD and subsequently installing
SBC Yahoo DSL. I have since completely uninstalled the SBC DSL software, but
this did not resolve the slow start-up issue. I also installed "Ad-Aware
6.0" and "Window Washer" to compliment Norton A/V 2003 to weed-out worms,
viruses, etc. The Notebook came pre-installed with Roxio Easy CD Creator 5
Basic - don't know if this conflicts.

ALSO SINCE THIS TIME, during every system shut-down or/and restart process,
a dialog box titled "End Program - Sample not responding" now appears (FYI,
there is no such program in my PC and Task Manager shows no program active).
The text in the box states "either this program is not responding or the
system is busy..." and provides 2 button choices: "Cancel" or "End Now" and
a horizontal 15 sec elapsed timer. It further explains that "you can wait to
see if the program will end or end it now" (during and after the timer ends)
"... if you click "Cancel", it will return you to Windows. If you select
'End Now', the program will end, and you will lose all unsaved data". I
discovered this really means any unsaved Windows XP Pro program data such as
updates, etc., because every time Windows Update runs, the same update
(Security Update #819696) reappears after having been installed numerous
times.

I suspect something major is corrupted or conflicted and have run Windows
Repair twice, which fixes some issues - but not these two. PLUS, now, most
manual or auto program installs, using "Install Shield" from CD's or
downloaded '*.exe' files will not initiate. But when I do a shutdown the
only possible way (after selecting the "End Now" button), the Install Shield
appears, starts its install but is immediately terminated as the system
shuts down. just in case, I've backed-up the entire hard drive to my
external Maxtor 1-Touch 80Gig.

OK, is my OS "hosed"? Do I have to do a fresh XP Pro install from the
upgrade CD? If yes, is this a destructive install that will wipe-out every
installed program and all my settings? And afterwards, if I restore from my
back-up, will these problems resurface and put me back on this treadmill?
Gratefull for any constructive advice!
