Long Hard Drive Activity

I am running WXP Pro. I notice that sometimes my c drive is running
continuously (or seems to anyway) - several minutes in fact.

How can I home in on what application is causing this? I look at Task
Manager, but there are many apps there.

Possibly it is the Indexing Service or the idle time processing of
the Prefetch Layout.Ini file. Indexing a drive's contents is one of
the most "Turned Off/Unnecessary" features of XP. Just open
My Computer, Right Click each drive's icon - Left Click Properties.
From the details box untic/uncheck "Allow Indexing Service...."
and Apply. During the application of the change a box may appear
that certain content could not be modified, just click "Ignore All".
As a further disable, you can use the MMC (Microsoft Mgmt
Console) Indexing category to remove the existing catalogs &
then the Services category to set the Indexing Service to Disabled.

Task Manager ... Processes (tab) ... View (menu) ... Select columns and turn
on the counters for various I/O's this will allow you to see the processes
that are performing high amounts of I/O and may be a pointer to the start of
your investigations.
