I have been trying for the last few weeks to setup this LAN in my home,
it is simple but for some reason things have become complicated...
I got everything setup but as soon as I connect then via the hub, all
I see are the lights flshing( not showing dataflow) but the go on for
about a second and go off for about a second, on the computers it said
the network cable is unpluged.. I am guessing that the problem is
because the distances are too long and the hub doesnt provide enough
power or something??(longest calbe=25m) can sum1 plz help?
I have the following hub/switch D-link DES-1008D
I also tried using a short (2m calbe) to one computer and another 15m
cable to the other, and both come up with limited or no connectivity, i
think i might know why this is the problem (automatic IP adress thing)
but i am trying to share my internet connection over the network and
you are ment to set the ip adresses on auto.. well thats all i have to
say.. CAN ANY1 PLeASE HELP??.. the helpless...

Are you using standard Ethernet (i.e. NOT crossover) cables? If so, it
sounds like the switch may be bad. Ethernet cables (preferably Cat 5 or
better) can be up to 100m in length, so that's not the problem.

I don't see your model listed on the D-Link site. As a guess, I will
consider the likelihood that you have an 8-port Gigabit (1000mpbs) Ethernet
switch. You don't mention a router, so you don't have a way to
automatically assign IP addresses. In theory, each computer should come up
with an APIPA IP address, which is reserved as described in RFC 3330. The
trouble is, the APIPA IP address has nothing to do with your modem.

If you have a dial up modem, you should use ICS to share the dial up modem.
All computers connected to the switch, and set the computer with the
Internet connection to share the modem. Only run ICS on the Internet
connected computer. All Cat 5e patch cords between computer and switch
should be straight through. ICS will take over DHCP IP address assignment;
you should get IP address 192.168.0.1 on the ICS computer Ethernet adapter,
and IP address 192.168.0.2 on the other computer Ethernet adapter.

i am uning standart Ethernet with my switch..

thanks for the help regaurding the ip adressed and it solved the
problem ( i tried on shorter cables) and everyhtign works fine but
still i am having problems with the actual computers connecting in the
lan.. so that is why i am confused, i have no conection longer then
100m.. but the computers do not seem to be commmunicating together
properly, when i use a short cable.. 5m aobut they work perfectly, ICS
works and everytting.. but as soon as I use the longer calbes (cat5e
they no-longer connect) so i am guessing that its just the bad cables i
am using.. ill replace the cables for and connections and hopefully
that will work.. thaks for the help nd ill keep u posted!!
