Long Bullets and Numbering Delay

Can someone please tell me why, when I first select some text in Word and
then select Format | Bullets and Numbering in Word 2002 with latest updates I
need to wait about two minutes on my 1.6GHz XP laptop before I can do
anything else.
Please do not tell me about alternative methods such as selecting from the
list of defined styles - I know all that and I know you don't get a delay
when you do that. The point is, I did not have this problem before and now
I've got it.
One thing I did do a while ago was to remove normal.dot and let Word
recreate it. I also know about the proper mvp-recommended ways to edit
Normal.dot, and I scrub my machine clean of all unwanted stuff very
rigorously, so the only question is: What is Word doing while I'm waiting,
and how can I make it quicker.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi John

I don't think I'm going to tell you anything you don't know, but presumably
what Word is 'doing' is gathering up the List Template details to display in
the B&N List Gallery panes. That information seems to come initially from
(and is ultimately stored back in) the Registry, but also shifts around to
reflect the List Templates in the current document, the last applied
numbering scheme, and the current wind direction.

I would therefore think it was worth trying a Reset on all the panes, once
the dialog does open, and then closing out of Word. If the problem comes
back when you open a specific type of document I'd suspect some corruption
in the List Templates in that document - you can't remove them so you'd
probably need to cut and paste to a new document.

Otherwise, I'd suspect the remade Normal.dot - perhaps it collected some
duff List Templates or was saved in a funny place? I'm wondering if there is
a Network issue here, with Word trying to find something non-local to your
machine.

Other possible areas to investigate are the printer driver and the
ListGalleryPresets Registry key.
