Long boot time

All of a sudden, my XP Pro boot time has gone up to about 4 minutes.
It pauses on the desktop and no new programs get added to the system
tray. Then is completes and performs normally.

One clue is that I've isolated it to the services being added and to
one in particular: Event Log. If I disable Event Log, everything
boots fast and seems to act normally. However, my antivirus program
will not operate without Event Log and everything I can read about
Event Log says its a necessary service to keep on.

Any ideas? Many thanks.

As I indicated in my original post, the boot time with Event Log shut
down is normal and programs other than NAV seem to operate OK, so
shutting down NAV won't have any effect.

Symantec has a fix on their site but it is a bit hard to find. I had
the same problem at 1.0.5.2 version of ccevtmgr.exe so I downloaded
1.0.3.4 from their web site and it fixed my problem. They're fairly
specific about the procedure to replace the file.

This is where I found it (long link - if it wraps you'll have to copy
& paste to browser in pieces):

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...Document&prod=&ver=&src=sg&pcode=&svy=&csm=no

If that doesn't work, just search Symantec Support (All Knowledge
Bases) for "slow startup" and the article is at the top of the list.
