Is there anyway for a Windows XP Home Edition or Media Edition to login to a
domain network, or is the answer Windows XP Pro?

Thanks

Only Windows XP Professional is designed with the
advanced networking capabilities necessary to log on
to a domain.

Looks like the answer to upgrade to Windows XP Pro. How about the Media
Edition functions. Do they go away, or is that an extension?

You cannot upgrade Windows Media Edition to
Windows XP Professional. A "clean install" would
be required which would wipe-out Windows Media
Edition in its entirety.

Users can use either OS and logon to a domain. You will not get the benefits
of XP Pro or 2000 Pro like group policies etc. XP MCE can be coerced into
joining a domain but you will lose media extender functionality. I've never
tried it personally. Google for lots of results. It looks like it would be
easiest to do during the install rather than after the fact. For use with AD
XP Pro is the way to go.
