How do I get rid of the logon promp at the start of Windows XP Home. I seemed
to get rid of this some time ago but it now re-appeared after installing
passport.net. I am the only user and I don't have a password.

Hi,

Go to Start - Run and type the following command then press enter:

control userpasswords2

Make sure "Users must enter a user name and password to use this
computer" is unchecked.

Butting in here - I have the same problem as Newbie has and did what
you suggested. My system now logs on as administratior, however, and
I have to logoff and back on again as myself to access my
Firefox/Thunderbird settings and mailbox et al.

I don't really want to drag my application settings folders for my
personalised programs across to 'all users application data' lest I
'break' something in the process.

Having to login as myself every time I boot isn't so much of a pain
that I need to live without it, but AdvancedSystemOptimizer/Systweak
Backup cannot access and will not backup my application data folders
at present (I have to do it manually by dragging the folders to my
external drive).

I was hoping that by ridding myself of the need to login as myself
would enable this feature.

Hi Tony

It sounds like you didn't specify which account you wanted to be the
default logon. Try it again:

Start > Run > control userpasswords2 <ok>
Click on your name in the Users box (you won't see anything happen)

Now uncheck the box "Users must enter. . ." and hit Apply.

The box that appears should have your name already typed in it. You just
need to enter your password as requested and OK twice to get out. Now
you should automatically log on as you :-)

You signed in under the system admin account. Re-do your steps:

To correct:

1. Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2 and press ok.

2. On the Users tab, left click "your user name" then clear the Users Must
Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click
OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the "user name
and password" for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

Added note: (Alex MVP)

If you want to logon to one of the other users, hold down shift as the
system boots up.

Tip:

Add Control UserPasswords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

What if you never had a password, you try to follow Tony's instructions, you
end up getting the Administrators logon display, have no password, try to go
back and correct the input error and holding down the "SHIFT" key does not
gain access to enter control userpaswords2 ?
I'm left with no access
