logon nightmare

I used to logon as administrator by just clicking "OK." To get rid of
the logon, I ran the command, "control userpasswords2" to set up an
automatic logon. Now the logon doesn't allow me in as administrator and
I have to use my user name and click "OK". Of course there are a number
of programs that I can't use without being administrator. I would
rather not reinstall xp. One problem is that I would probably have to
be logged in as adminstrator to fix the problem. Thanks in advance for
any solutions to this.

Press Ctrl +Alt + Del twice during boot and you should be able to log
on as administrator.

You can download tweakUI, which is part of Windows XP Power Toys to
select which accounts are visible on the welcome screen:

Good luck

I tried Ctr+Alt+Del twice, several times during boot, and nothing
happened. I have XP Home edition, so I don't know if that works. I did
download tweakUI, and tried to use it a few times, for automatic
logon. The logon message comes up with "administrator" but there's
also a message that I can't logon "because of an account" -- whatever
that means. I've never had a password to logon, but I'm continually
asked for an adminstrator password. The third time I used tweakUI, I
decided to try putting in a password. So the password came out in dots,
but the same message about not being able to logon came up. I'm really
hoping not to have to reinstall. I have over 60,000 files on my C:
drive, as well as programs in 6 other partitions.

Howard,

If you are using Windows XP Home then, you may try booting the
computer in safe mode. (Press the F8 key during startup to start the
computer in Safe mode.)
Type the user name as Administrator and leave the password blank and
click
OK.

or

If still no luck, use Start> Run> msconfig> Boot.ini. Select the
/Safeboot
option. Restart the computer. It will load to Safe Mode. Before
leaving Safe Mode, uncheck the box for /Safeboot.

When you boot in safe mode, you'll be using the administrator account.
You can then create new accounts with administrative privileges and
set their passwords as you like; you can also change the passwords of
all accounts, including the one that is giving you trouble.

Hope this helps

Roger, thanks for the tips. I tinkered with it in safe mode, and
finally got it to go straight to the welcome screen. I *think* I'm
still the administrator.
