the xp home machine is connected to the xp pro machine. xp home was asking
for user/password when connecting to shared folder but has stopped doing
this. It just logs on without any security.

What can i do to fix this?

guest account is disabled. SFS is turned off (although one comp is xp home).
Perhaps the xp home comp with SFS is the problem but until a couple of days
ago i was met with a logon prompt when accessing the pro machine.

There are two ways a client (ie your XP Home computer) might have access to the
server (XP Pro computer) without entering an account name / password:
# Guest account activated on the server.
# Classic File Sharing enabled, and a non-Guest account with non-blank password,
matching the one in use on the client at the time, also enabled.

If the Guest account is disabled on the server, then the latter scenario has to
be in effect. Change any of the 5 conditions required in the second scenario,
and your client should cease to automatically connect.
# Enable Simple File Sharing (which requires Guest access).
# Delete, disable, or rename the non-Guest account on the client, or the server.
# Change the password on the non-Guest account on the client, or the server.
