I am running XP Home Edition on a single (no networking) computer. i have had my computer for about a year and the logon (the light blue screen after typing your password), has recently just stopped there for about 2 minutes. The computer starts up fine and gets to the Welcome screen just fine and speedy, but after i click my name and type my password, it says "Loading Ben" (Ben is my name) and stops on that screen for 2 minutes. My hard drive activity light (the one that flashes when your accessing things or searching for files on your harddrive), is off. Its not even flashing or steady-on. I just ran a full virus scan and a spam scan (with adaware 6 professional) and neither of the scans found anyhting. If you know what the heck is going on with my computer, please tell!

You are likely starting too many programs upon startup. Your startup folder should have only your virus protection and maybe your power-supply(if you've got an external one) icons. I assume that you're using Win XP so just put the mouse pointer on the start button, choose ALL PROGRAMS, then open your startup folder. DELETE EVERYTHING except the ones mentioned above. You'll also find a side benifit to doing this, you'll likely get less spam and other crap. A very good place to find information is to go to a site called TweakXP.com.

im a couple of steps ahead of you Mr.T. I have cleared my startup folder completly and also have DL TweakXP. I have also used the Run> Msconfig to select which programs to start up and it still is very slow. got any other ideas?
