When I try to logon to my XP computer it immediately logs me off. I have tried Safe Mode and still can not get in. Is there anything I can do short of reinstalling?

Just your logon?

What about the default administrator in Safe mode, does that work?

If so, create a new profile for yourself - with a different name than
before.. Then log in as the new user, take ownership of the old profile and
copy all you needed files out of it. LEAVE the NTUSER.DAT and APPLICATION
DATA folders alone - do not copy - likely your problem is in one of those
two things.

I am having the same problem. It started with a worm
It wont log on under admin either, it just shows desktop, and immediately logs off

I was able to re-install windows, but it installed in a different directory, and that is how I got to run viruscan, by the way, if you go to macafee, they have a daily file that you can download unzip, and copy to a cd, an other PC helps to do the download and CD buning; then run it on the PC in question, that is how I fownd the virus, but I haven't been able to clear up the shutting down issue

Let me know if you found a fix, if you don't mind.

Walter - I ended up creating a new XP instance on the same partition and coping all My Document, Email and Favorites to CD. I then reformated and began again. Total of 12 hours to get back to together all software, patches and documents. What I need now is to be able to burn a bootable DVD to recover quicker next time.
