Logical Drive Gone

Installed a new WD SATA on another pc. Did not touch the
other 2 drives (E&F and G&H) at all. Reinstalling XP Pro
SP3 and assorted software went fine.

BUT!!! Logical drive H is gone. Missing. When I click
H: in Explorer it asks whether I want to format the
drive.

There is nothing really vital or valuable on H: but I would
not mind having the files back. I have tried several of the
free recovery aps listed on PC World to no avail.

Suggestions??

Run diskmgmt.msc via the Start/Run button, then check what file system the
Disk Manager reports for the missing drive. Note also that the volume could
be visible under a different drive letter.

File System for H: is blank - not listed.
There are two logical drives on disc 3: G: and H:.
G: is ok; H: is not.

btw - I downloaded a supposedly free ap that found all the
files on H: but wanted big bucks to actually recover them
(so how is that free??).

So the files are recoverable -- for a fee.

Keep looking. There are freeware programs that do the same thing.

Stop

I had this problem.
Go to explorer select properties make sure under folder option you
unchecked last option 'use simple file sharing'
Go to security tab, advance settings and look at owner tab you may not
be owner
on some systems rather than not having permission to read I have been
told it was unformatted. my last rebuild on my G drive I had same
problem with no permissions set

hope that helps
