When I try to log off & shut down my machine I get a wrirring sound.. This
sound very much to my ears as the same sound that I have heard when the
floppy disk drive is looking for a disk that it can't find. Any ideas as to
what the problem might be & how to fix the problem?

Clear the recent documents list in the start button, Properties. Often, the
seek is due to a file read on that drive.

Could be your anti virus program checking to see if there is a floppy in
the drive, if found then it would scan it to guard against a boot up
virus.
