I have just gotten a new computer with XP Home Edition. My
question -

I DON'T want to have to log on with a user name or
password. My computer is strictly for home use and only my
husband and I use it. I do not want to create separate
accounts, and I don't want him to have to enter a password
to log on.

Is there a way to simply have XP start like the old
versions of Windows - is there a way to disble that log-in
and password?

By default, XP does not have you log in with a password, and you don't need
to have separate user accounts. To change your current setup, click on
Start, Control Panel, and go to the User Accounts control panel. Click on
one of your accounts, then click Remove my Password. Do that for both of
the accounts. Then click on the account you wish to remove and click on the
choice to delete the account.

Go to Control Panel > User Accounts and click on Change the way users log on
and off.
Remove the checkmark to disable the Welcome screen.

Thanks Patty,

I haven't even gotten the new one out of the box, but I was just reading
about getting it set up and came across this log in thing.

So, if I don't create a password, I'll not be asked the next time - is that
right?

But do I need to set up one account as the computer administrator in order
to access all of the functions?

I guess I'm afraid if I do something wrong, I'll be locked out!

Thanks!

1. Click on Start\Run.
2. In the "Open" field type "CONTROL USERPASSWORDS2"
3. Click OK.
4. Select the user from the list for which you want to auto login as.
5. Now, uncheck the option "user must enter an user name and password to use
the computer"
6. Click Apply.
7. You will be prompted for password.
8. Give the same password which you entered already.(which you enter
normally)
9. Confirm it.
10.Now restart the system.

You will no longer be prompted for user password at startup.

If the problem persists, download Tweak UI and install it from any of the
following URL:

-or-

owertoySetup.exe

Once you installed Windows XP TweakUI. Open Tweak UI. In the Logon section,
set the default username and password to be used

Thanks Eddy,

And everyone - great help and ideas. I'm sure one of them will work and do
the trick.

I can always count on getting help here in these forums!

You're welcome TN.
If your computer came with a preloaded copy of XP Home, most likely you will
be asked to:
1.Choose regional and language settings; country, time zone...etc.
2.Enter a user name and password. You can leave the password blank, but do
choose a user name. This user name is automatically given full
administrative rights.
The built-in Administrator Account (not the one you chose above) can be
accessed by booting to Safe Mode. Use this one for troubleshooting purposes
only.

Hope this clarifies a bit more.

Depends a little bit on how your manufacturer set it up. But you are
correct, if you don't create a password you won't be asked for one. In XP
Home Edition, your account will automatically be set up as an adminstrator
account. Now during setup, it may ask about a very special Adminstrator
account, which is different than an account with administrator privileges.
If asked to provide a password for the Adminstrator account, go ahead and do
so, and write it down and keep it in a safe place. This is not the account
you sign into on a daily basis. This is a special hidden account you can
only reach from Safe Mode, and it should be password protected. Just don't
forget what that password is or lose it. Later during setup it has a screen
where it asks you who will be using the computer and leaves boxes for 5
names. These are the operating profiles and by default you will not be
asked to provide passwords for these. These are all set up as accounts with
administrator privileges in XP Home. You can just put one name, or you and
your husband can each have your own. I highly recommend you each have your
own profile, but you do not need to password protect them. What will happen
then is when you boot the machine you will see the welcome screen with your
name and your husband's name. You'll click on the appropriate one and it
will load your personal preferences. But if you really want to not do it
that way, then just provide one name and you'll have only one account.

Thanks so much NaresH,

I've copied all of these directions along with other posts, so I think I
should be able to handle it!

Thanks for the link to Tweak, too!

Thanks so much for all the information Patty,

I've copied this, and hopefully it will all go smoothly. I've had Windows 95
forever - and I really wasn't sure of getting started with XP.

These forums are great! Thanks!

this issue! I'm going to give it a try this morning! I copied everything so
I'd have it all for a reference!

Thanks again!
