OK i have this PC here was loaded with all sorts of spyware/malware etc.
Took 35 mins to get up and running.........installed ewido ran it, it
removed say 40 instances of the garbage. now when i try to reboot the system
it get to the log on screen(this is new) as it booted to the desktop before.
when i click on the user name (this is in safe mode also and with either
admin or user name) it starts to load user the personal settings and the
within 1sec. it goes to logging off..........any ideas?

There is a certain type of spyware that can cause this symptom, try this:

1. boot using your XP CD
2. Enter recovery console
3. at the command prompt go to c:\windows\system32
4. type: copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe
5. exit and reboot. Login
6. DON"T STOP - run regedit
7. Find the Userinit key in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows NT\Current
Version\Winlogon 8. Modify the entry: C:\WINDOWS\System32\wsaupdater.exe
so that it reads C:\Windows\System32\userinit.exe

Mike,

Click Start > Run, type control userpasswords2
click OK > uncheck ''Users must enter a user name & password to use this
computer', click OK & restart computer.
Does it log on normally? Any errors in the Event Viewer?

I would try a repair install at this point Mike, also if you can, slave
your HDD into another PC and copy any important data over, just in
case the repair goes wrong...
