When I log into a windows xp pro machine to a 2000 server domain it takes a
couple minutes to load the persoanl settings. If I set the primary dns
server to the server ip then it boots quickly but I am unable to access the
internet. There are 3 machines and only one had this problem. All settings
were identical. Now a second machine is doing the same thing. I had removed
some spyware and adware from the machines prior to this issue developing. I
had restored all removed items but it stil did not change anything. The
workstations had sp2 on them but I removed it off of one with no change. I
have been unable to find a fix for this. Everything does work fine but the
amount of time to loa windows is frustrating to the employees. Any help
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jim

It sounds like you don't have forwarding zones set up properly on the
server. The server should look only to itself for DNS with forwarding
zones set up for the Internet. The workstations should look only to the
server for DNS with no DNS pointing to an outside ISP.

You are most of the way there.
Leave the clients pointing to the server.
That fixes the login.
Now we need to fix the external resolution.

On the server, go the the DNS server console.
Expand the Forward Lookup Zones.
If there's a root ( . ) zone, delete it.

Ensure the server has Internet access in order to query externally.

The server will then use root hints to perform external lookup.
