My computer immdiately logs me off after I log on...I can't even do anything. What do I do?

Cane, is this occurring after you've installed Windows XP, or did this begin
to randomly start occuring?

Please let me know the exact scenario you're encountering, any error
messages, etc. Also, it would be good to know if this occurred after
installing software or an update.

Please let me know, and I will see what I can do assist you!

Lance

I've having the same problem as Cane logging on to Windows XP. It worked fine until I installed a third-party antivirus/privacy software from a download. The trojan "bug", Backdoor BAM, was detected and cleaned right after downloading and then the power went off. Upon rebooting, it prompts me for the privacy service password, but then can't log me into the Welcome screen. After a "log in" attempt, The desktop screen flashes on for a second with no icons then logs me off and saves personal settings

Logging in as administrator does the same

Can't boot in safe mode since password prompt comes up then logs me on and off again

I notice the screensaver has changed to the default, but the desktop scene remains the one I chose

Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide

I am going to ping some people here at Microsoft and see what sort of
solutions we can offer you both on this issue. My apologies for my delay in
response. I will follow up next week with whatever feedback I receive.

Jetster, can you tell me which 3rd Party/Antivirus application you
installed?

Thanks, will follow up soon.

I am having the same exact problem.

No new software was installed (to my knowledge ... i.e. viruses are a
possibility). Suddenly, I cannot log in. It goes to log in and then just
boots you right back out. No error msgs, nothing.
I can log in in Safe Mode, but *NOT* in Safe Mode with Networking.

I finally just had to reinstall the OS (I had all of my important files
backed up...

I am having the same problem on a desktop running Xp Pro
I was able to reinstall XP as a new install, and then ran Vscan, and found a W32 virus
I cleaned the virus, but the login proble still exists
I now have a dual boot machine!
By the way, this is my wife's work computer, she downloaded an email with a .pif extention, and that was the beginning of my nightmares, so here we are

By the way, I have found many posts regarding this issue, from laptops to desktops, dating back to January '04, but I haven't found any with a solution yet

Hope that Microsof can help out with this issue, since it seems to be picking up steam
Any help will be appreciated

Thank

Walter

This is a cut and paste of a solution I found on the lavasoft.com website I found. It worked for me

I put my windows XP cd back in (home edition) and got to the recovery prompt. You should be in C:\windows now follow from here

C:\window
type 'cd system32' the directory should now b
C:\windows\system3
type 'copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe'
1 file should be copied, now REBOOT
