About 3 weeks ago after a MS update fix, my HP laptop (home Edition
SP2)suddenly would not get past the logon screen. It gave no user icon to
click on. Safe boots, using a boot disk from my desktop machine, and trying
to log in as admin did not work to get me in to restore. I had to travel
with the laptop, so I rebuilt it with the HP disks, and then restored all the
software, including fixes. It worked fine for a day, and then the same thing
happened. Is there a permanent way to fix this?

Yes! stop installing the hotfix that is causing this.

Have you seen this problem before? Right now I can't get in to do a system
restore. Is there any way to bypass the dead log on screen?
