I recently learned that shutting down from task manager is not a good thing.
What about logging users off? Is logging off a user in Task Manager the same
as logging off through Start -> Logoff? Thanks.

Hi,

Nothing wrong with logging off that way.

OK, thanks Rick. I was surprised that shutting down that way was no good (do
you agree?). There are no warnings or statements on the task manager help
that would make you think you shouldn't shut down that way. So, I wasn't
sure if the logoff procedure might cause the same problems or not. Thanks.

Hi,

The problem with killing tasks or shutting down that way can be best
explained by an analogy:

When you want to stop a car, do you slow down with the brakes, or run into a
brick wall? The former allows the transmission to gear down, and the engine
adjust to the reduced acceleration, as well as all of the components of the
vehicle, including the occupants. Hitting a wall causes damage that may not
be repairable. Even if the car still runs, it may not run correctly. Doing
it repeatedly only makes matters worse.

I'm surprised that Task Manager doesn't provide a warning against using its
shutdown procedure. Is the Task Manager Restart process safe or does it use
the *brick wall* turnoff? You already told me the Task Manager Logoff
procedure is OK.

Hi,

Task Manager kills a process when shut down is initiated or when you use the
kill process option. It's not the normal way to do it, it is there as a
fail-safe when other methods are not working or the application is hung.
Using the logoff option just initiates a normal logoff.

Hi,

Restart kills processes - brick wall theory.
