I have a wireless network. My main computer is XP home.
When the other computer was running 98SE there was an
icon in the notification area that allowed the remote
computer to disconnect the dial-up modem from the phone
line. I upgraded the 2nd computer to XP home and there is
no log-off icon anymore. I have to walk through to the
main computer and manually disconect the modem there.
Any ideas, Tony
To make the Internet Gateway icon appear in the notification area:
1. Make sure that the "SSDP Discovery Service" is running:
a. Right click My Computer, and click Manage.
b. Double click Services and Applications.
c. Double click Services.
d. Double click "SSDP Discovery Service". If the Service status is
Stopped, click Start.
e. If the Startup type is Disabled, set it to Manual.
2. Make sure that the "Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control
Client" networking service is installed:
a. Click Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs.
b. Click "Add/Remove Windows Components".
c. Scroll down the list of components and double click "Networking
Services".
d. If there's a box for "Internet Gateway Device Discovery and
Control Client", put a check mark in it.
3. Open the Network Connections folder.
4. Disable and then enable the local area network connection. The
Internet Gateway connection should appear.
5. Right click the Internet Gateway connection, click Properties, and
put a check mark in "Show icon in notification area when connected".
