I want to run windows update when logged in to XP as a
user, but using the "run as" option. I double click
windows update on the start menu (right click does not
offer a log in as different user option) and the log in
screen comes up. I can not log in from here even tho the
user name for administrator and/or domain administrator,
and the password is correct. It gives a message saying
C:\windows\system32\wupdmgr.exe the directory name is
invalid.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to exterminate this
bug? Thanks, Brian

Brian,
When I right click on the Windows Update icon under the start menu I get the
run as menu. I will do some further investigation but wanted to let you
know I can select the run as option when right clicking.

Not sure how you are trying to launch this, with a
shortcut you have defined ?
Try right-shift right-click on the WU entry in the
Programs menu and selecting RunAs

Ok I think I have figured out part of your problem.
You need to change your start menu to use the Classic Start menu not the
Windows XP start menu. This simple change changed the menu that you get
when right clicking.

Thank you for your reply. This is not a shortcut that I
created, it is the original one that came with the
machine (Compaq Evo D500 SFF). It points to
C:\windows\system32\wupdmgr.exe. Right-shift right-click
on the WU entry has no effect. I do not get run-as on the
context menu. and when I double click on the shortcut, I
get the login screen, the correct user name is there, I
enter the correct pw, and it fails with the error message
above. would appreciate any help you can provide. Brian

Thank you Jamie, but it didn't work. I was using the XP
menu, did change to Classic menu but there is no
difference in the context menu options. Any other
suggestions? Brian

Is the secondary logon service running? Can you make a shorcut to
wupdmgr.exe and then right click the shortcut to get the runas option?

That is where the file is supposed to be.
If you navigate to that file in Explorer and use a
r-shift context menu to use RunAs directly on it,
are you successful. If so, the Compaq provided
shortcut is now bogus; if not RunAs is having an
issue. (As other respondant mentioned, the Secondary
Login service is running, right?)

Hi, has this been resolved? I have the secondary logon service running, classic start menu etc. but no runas option on the right clik menu, even with shift. can anyone help?
