I am cleaning viruses off a friend's PC. Fot it mostly clean, only left with
stuff that won't go away with SpyBot or AdAware or NAV. Went to MSCONFIG and
stopped several things from running on Startup screen. Now when I click on
the login I want, it says logging in, then within 2 seconds logs off and
returns to login screen. I do not have any other logins.
In safe mode I login as Administrator and it does the same thing.
I have restored to last known good from F8 menu, no change (I suspect there
isn't one!).
What I wanted to do is go to DOS and restore win.ini, system.ini etc from
..bak files if possible, figuring that would put it back before I messed in
msconfig! But can't get to DOS without going thru SAFE MODE successfully in
XP, apparently.

Any help? System came from Wal-Mart with only restore CD. Anyone know if
would wipe all out, or offer options? It is an e-machine.

You'll have to use the eMachine Restore CD. There is no
DOS to boot to in Windows XP because its not based on
the old MS-DOS platform.

Try fixing the Master Boot Record. When you put your recovery CD in the drive and then boot the machine you should be able to follow the on screen prompts to get into the recovery console. Once there type in fixmbr and hit enter on you key board. Many recovery disks are in fact complete copies of XP. But again some aren't. Lets hope yours is. {:~)

Thank you both. Unknown P: Would a damaged MBR still allow me to get clear
to the login prompt? I thought "boot" was over by then....no? Just curious,
will certainly try it!

Does the Restore CD on eMachine wipe out the disk, or does it perhaps offer
a Repair Option, or a Command Prompt option so I can try several other ideas
I've found on forums? I can't find anything that doesn't involve command
prompt, and with no logon, there is none!

TIA,
Ann

That's a poor advice, Ann. Please ignore.
