Lockup at Welcome screen

A cusotmer's system has started locking up at the Welcome
screen,in both normal and safe-mode start, but the mouse
still moves. We have disabled the APM in the BIOS, no
change. Customer did mention a possible virus, so we are
testing for that now.

I did find KB#294427 article and it states to "Delete
restoration data and proceed to system boot menu", but we
cannot find any reference to this.

If the av scan shows the machine is clear, what about doing some RAM and
heat testing?
