Locking down word settings

Hello everyone

I hope you can help..

I have just taken a role as an IT Technician in a high school. One of the pupils favourite games is to alter the autocorrect list to display rude phrases when common words are typed - very funny! :o/ They also like to mess with other autoformatting settings and macros

Is there a way that I can lock word down so that these facilities cannot be accessed or at least changes made are not retained? I know about loading word with the switch /a, but this does not seem to alleviate my woes

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Many Thanks

Ben

If you download the zip file from the article “How can I import and export
all my AutoCorrect entries, so they can be transferred to another machine?”
at:

http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/ExportAutocorrect.htm

You can probably modify the code so that it exports the altered autocorrect
file and replaces it with a virgin one.

AutoCorrect is stored in normal.dot (if formatted) or in one or more .acl
files.

While it would be possible to take the ability to add AC entries off the
menus, this wouldn't prevent a determined and knowledgeable student from
adding entries. Word just isn't designed to keep people from modifying it.
Rather, it is designed to be user-flexible.

To take AC or AC Options off the Tools menu, use Tools => Customize.

What would be possible is to store some basic settings and files in files
and macros. These can then be copied/run upon each user's log in and on
starting Word. Would that be sufficient for what you want to do?

Thanks for that, I'll play around and come back with my findings as to the most appropriate solution.

Thanks Charles

I think that the macros and basic settings would probably stop 99% of the medling, and that is good enough for me. I have also played with making the .acl files read-only which seems to work

I wonder if I can get each machine to point at a centralised set of .acl files, administrated by me?!

Thanks for the advice

Ben.

You could certainly have each computer copy some centralized files to a
local space upon login. Remember, that even in this situation it is probably
not a good idea to share normal.dot among users.
