Locked out of drive C

I have a strong suspicion that my pc was hacked into recently. In an act of desperation I disabled file sharing on my drive c (I left it enabled under Administrator - or so I thought). Now I am unable to access the drive. I get 'access denied.' If I right-click the drive, the system freezes for a long time. If I try System Restore, I get an error message. I tried all the various Administrative Tools (in control panel) with no success. I've tried all these things logged on to the Administrator account and in Safe mode, and am still denied access to the drive. I tried the 'revert to last known good configuration' option after hitting F8 but again no luck. I'm certain there must exist an option that will allow me to re-enable file sharing on my drive but I have searched the web and have come up with absolutely nothing. I am at my wits end at this point and would most definitely appreciate any suggestions. Please reply here or you may email me at (e-mail address removed)

What exactly did you do to "disable file sharing" on your drive. Sharing
normally refers to network access which does not affect local access. Are you
sure you changed sharing permissions and not "security" ntfs permissions. If
your computer has been hacked or infected, that may explain the strange
behavior. If you can access the command prompt try running the secedit command
as shown in the KB link below and append " /areas filestore " to the end of the
command to see if it helps. Look in Event Viewer for any error messages that may
be helpful. If all fails look at doing a upgrade install that will require the
install cd, product key, and require you to first install the service pack
[unless your install disk has SP1] and then all critical updates at no more than
say five at a time being sure not to connect to the internet until you have
enabled at least the built in ICF firewall. Of course since you suspect your
computer has been compromised, you need to scan for viruses/worms/trojans. See
the links below for more info. --- Steve

Hi. Actually, yes it was the security ntfs permissions. I did a right-click and selected the 'sharing and security' tab. This displayed a list of all user accounts. I disabled all but the administrator account. But as I mentioned my administrator account (even in safe mode) was affected as well

I am going to try your suggestions below and will try to report back here my results

I failed to mention that I'm using WinXP Pro. Does the Pro disc have an option for 'upgrade' or 'reinstall?

Thank

Yes, an upgrade install can be easily done. You should still be able to access the
drive as an administrator so I am wondering if something else is going on. Try taking
ownership as administrator and giving back permissions to the appropriate groups as
described below. --- Steve
