locked document

how do i unlock a document? i am unable to do ANYTHING to a any sort of
document, new or old. why i try to type it says "this modification is not
allowed due to locked document."
 
Have you activated Word? Or is this a trial version that has expired?

Either the document is protected in some way or your version of Word has not
been activated or is a trial version that has expired.
