Locked document Word 2003

I have a document that I am trying to merge with a
datasource using VB 6.0.

The application works ok in Word 2002, but not in Word
2003. In 2003, I get a 'mydoc.doc is locked for editing
by 'Ron Ford'.'

I've tried everything I can think of to unlock it without
success. Word 2003 has been activated.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
