Greetings,

In order to lock cells in Excel 2000, I have to protect the sheet (without a
password). However, I am using the group and outline feature to hide
certain rows and columns. Is there a way for me to allow users to open and
close grouped items (+/-) and still password-protect the sheet? Thanks.

If you already have the outline/subtotals applied, you can protect the worksheet
in code (auto_open/workbook_open??).

Option Explicit
Sub auto_open()
With Worksheets("sheet1")
.Protect Password:="hi", userinterfaceonly:=True
.EnableOutlining = True
.EnableAutoFilter = True
End With
End Sub

It needs to be reset each time you open the workbook. (excel doesn't remember
it after closing the workbook.)

If you're new to macros, you may want to read David McRitchie's intro at:

I saw that. But I want to be able to allow users to open and close them
even when the cells are locked. Locking cells should not imply locking
functionality.

Protecting the sheet disables lots of things.
