Lock-ups since other drive formatted

I have a harddrive I removed for another and then foolishly formatted that
removed drive. I didn't realize at the time that Outlook for instance, had
its data files stored there and am now having trouble with Outlook, but
that's a separate issue. What is happening now is that my system locks up all
the time and for no particular reason since it's done it in Outlook, IE,
Firefox...
I ran a virus scan that turned up nothing and the only other new thing is
added a new Logitech keyboard.
I have a feeling that I have bastardized this version of XP running. In the
past I have never had any success repairing windows from the CD and usually
have had to wipe the hard drive and re-install everything. The settings and
transfer wizard sucks since it doesn't install any of the old programs and
not all the email accounts/settings though it is helpful it is not robust
enough...
Do I have any other alternatives to fix this thing short of the format route?
Thanks in advance,
-jt.

The problem seems to be, as you yourself have admitted, that you have
"bastardized" your Windows installation. No amount of repairing or
reinstalling will help with this problem. You need to sit back, take your
time, and learn how to do things right. Yes, it takes time.

"learn how to do things right"
I'm afraid that is quite a loaded statement there... M$ should "know" what's
missing and be able to fix it but that would make the program a bit too
robust!
I was a tester and developer at M$ (just got my settlement check thank-you)
and there is no way that there is a "right" way. Everything is made up on the
fly so to insinuate there is a right way means they know what they are
doing... It kind of meets expectations and doesn't always reboot the sytem
so, SHIP IT!
Oh yea, thanks for confirming my suspicions. How do you spell Linux?
