Can anyone tell me the default location for boo.ini file. I happen to make
amendments in it by using 'Start' & 'Run' buttons. And now it appears in the
c drive, whereas it never appeared there before. When I delete it, I receive
a message at the start up 'Bad or missing boot.ini file Booting from
C:\Windows'. I dont want to receive this message and I dont want the
boot.ini in the c drive either. can anyone help.

Hi

boot.ini should be in the X:\ drive - where X is the letter of your system drive - it is put there by default, so it was there before. It needs to be left there otherwise you will get a lot of problems with booting your PC - which is what you have found already.

Hi

the boot.ini file always resides in the primary boot
partition, which is mainly C-drive. It is always been
there. You should not delete it, nor should you put it
somewhere else. This is usually a hidden system file,
which means you can not see it in explorer (depending on
your explorer option settings). you must copy the file
back. if your PC is a single boot, you can copy the file
from almost any pc, otherwise, you have to write it
manually or copy it from another pc with similar
partition arrangement as yours. This file tells OS, which
section of which partiotion of which disk in the Pc, the
OS resides.

hope this helps.

Thank you indeed, Nima!
But I am still confused over its visibility, it never appeared there
before, I mean I have always set my browser to show hidden files and I have
never seen it there. Could you please tell me a way to hide it. I just dont
want it there, somone might fiddle with it and I cant risk this happening.
Thanking in anticipation.

The boot.ini file must be in the root of the C: drive. If it is not there,
the system will not boot without errors.

It's a protected file, not a hidden file. Setting hidden files to show would
not show it. Setting protected files to show would show it.

In My Computer/Tools/Folder Options/View tab. Select the "Hide protected
operating system files (Recommended)" option.
