I am trying to move my email from Windows Mail on a Vista machine to
another running the same.

In Windows Mail I see all my emails and folder structure. But in
Explorer when I go to the local store folder and view it the folder
names are cut off and followed by random characters for example:
"blahfolder 23f" or "blahfol 2f4"

So of course when I use export and import the messed up folder names
are what get carried over.

Same if I do Windows Easy Transfer to back it and move the mail to the
new machine.

I cant seem to find anything on the net about this problem.

I'm stumped and with tens of thousands of email to move and dozens of
custom folders it would be a nightmare to have to start from
scratch.

Thank for any help anyone can provide.

There is a limit to the length of the file path to any given folder. So I
suspect you are approaching that length and as a consequence WinMail is
truncating the filename so that length (512 characters I think) is not
exceeded when referencing the file. You might try shortening your folder
names in the future.

I thought about that but the folder names are pretty short... I did
notice they all get truncated at 11 characters but then windows adds
more characters to it to make it longer so you would think if they
were getting cutt off because they were too long that windows wouldnt
add more characters to it.

C:\Users\(myusername)\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Local
Folders\Imported Folder\Inbox\starcrashsp de5

"starcrashsp de5" should be "starcrashspeedway"
"AT&T Univer 8b5" should be "AT&T Universal"

Also something that didnt make sense was that some folders which are
inside my inbox folder show up in windows mail but do not exist under
inbox on the file system, but they should.
